November, 2009
Dear Eagle Family,
We are in the midst of our fall to winter season crossover with exciting finishes to come in soccer, volleyball, and football and anticipated beginnings for both the men???s and women???s basketball teams. One sport (cross country), meanwhile, has already competed in their Big Sky Championships with our men finishing fifth and our women placing ninth.
Women???s Soccer
Major kudos to our ladies for finishing the Big Sky regular season in second place as they were picked in the preseason for eighth. Coach Hageage???s team will now go to Portland State and play third-seeded, Idaho State in one semifinal on Friday, November 6. Should they win, they will play for the Conference title on Sunday, November 8 against either top-seeded Portland State or fourth-seeded Northern Arizona.
Women???s Volleyball
The regular season is winding down and the race for first is very tight between us, Portland State and Northern Colorado with Montana nipping at all three teams??? heels. Winning the regular season is key as it gives that team the chance to host the Big Sky Tournament the following year so the last couple of weeks of the regular season should be exciting. The Conference Tournament, meanwhile, is slated for the Friday (semis) and Saturday (Finals) after Thanksgiving at Reese Court ??? get your tickets now!!
Football
With the announcement from the NCAA that the 2009 postseason ban had been lifted, our team did a great job responding to the task at hand against Portland State at Qwest Field in Seattle. The entire event was a great chance to showcase Eastern on the west side of the Cascades and our supporters really responded. Similarly to 2004 and 2007 when the team needed to win its final few games to earn an at-large berth in the FCS Playoffs, this year is no different. After a bye week on November 7, we travel to two very tough opponents in Southern Utah (Nov. 14) and Northern Arizona (Nov. 21). It should be a fun couple of weeks of football.
National Players of the Week
Amazingly, our football team has had four different national players of the week this season. Most recently, Matt Johnson earned the honor with four interceptions against Portland State. Previously, J.C . Sherritt, Matt Nichols and Taiwan Jones have each earned the recognition.
Operation 1K
Many of you who read this are EAA members (and we thank you!) and you will/should have received a letter from both me and Billie Jean Hall (this year???s EAA President) outlining a mini membership campaign in which we are asking current EAA members to try and recruit one person to this worthwhile organization. Prior to the campaign, our membership stood at approximately 700 with our goal to get to 1000 by year???s end. Thank you in advance for your support.
Women???s and Men???s Basketball Tickets
There are a number of different options this year to purchase both men???s and women???s basketball tickets???log onto www.goeags.com and be a part of the exciting action this year at Reese Court.
Happy Thanksgiving
Finally, Happy Thanksgiving to all of our faithful Eastern supporters and see you in Reese for the Big Sky Volleyball Championships ??? make that a part of your holiday weekend!!
Best Wishes and Go Eagles!!!
Bill
