Just over a week into its existence, the Eastern Washington University Recreation Center will play host to "An Hour on the Ice," a free event co-hosted by the EWU Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Big Sky Conference.
Alongside student-athletes from a number of Big Sky schools, participants will receive the opportunity to learn how to ice skate from EWU's club ice hockey team in the Sunday (May 18) event. The event is open to children enrolled in Cheney Public Schools.
Registration will begin at 2:15 on that date, and the event will last from 3-4:30 p.m. Following the ice skating, participants will learn what it is like to be a college student and what, in addition to taking classes, awaits them when they enter college, including life lessons and leadership opportunities. A free skate will conclude the day's activities.
The event will coincide with the Big Sky Spring Meetings, which take place in Spokane from Monday-Tuesday (May 19-20, respectively).
The University Recreation Center was opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 8. Designed for use by students, faculty, staff and the community, the multi-purpose center will serve as the premier hub for student life and community health and wellness activities.
Skates will be provided by EWU. The first 20 students to register are guaranteed a spot. Please contact Mike Miller to sign up and to give him the shoe size of the participant, the parent(s) name and a telephone number. He may be reached at 509.879.5917.
