Big Sky track and field champion and tennis player and are Eastern’s recipients for the month of February
Big Sky Conference weight throw champion Nicole Luckenbach and tennis player Chad Henninger andfrom the track and field team have been selected as Eastern Washington University’s Scholar-Athletes for the month of February.
Luckenbach is a senior who graduated in 2005 from Snohomish (Wash.) High School. She has a 3.1 grade point average as a business administration major and won the weight throw title at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 27 in Bozeman, Mont. Her effort in Bozeman earned her Field Athlete of the Meet honors as she broke her own school record in the weight throw.
She went on to finish14th on March 12 in the weight throw at the NCAA Division I Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. She was the first Eastern female to compete at the NCAA Championships indoors since 1995 when Joyce Rainwater competed in the 55 meters.
Luckenbach was ranked 16th in the NCAA Division I going into the meet with a career-best mark of 65-9 at the Big Sky Conference Championships. That mark broke the previous Brick Breeden Fieldhouse record of 62-6 set by Northern Arizona’s Anna Soderburg in 1996.
Luckenbach's mark also broke her own school record that she set earlier in the season with a throw of 61-11 3/4. That effort broke the school record of 60-9 1/2 set in 2002 by Jamie Martin and earned Luckenbach Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Luckenbach now sets her sights on the outdoor season as she will be defending her Big Sky Conference title in the hammer throw. She holds the school record in that event with a throw of 191-11 set at last year’s league meet.
Henninger is a sophomore from Eugene, Ore., and graduated in 2008 from Sheldon High School. He has a 3.32 grade point average as an economics major.
He recorded singles wins in February over opponents from Gonzaga, Whitworth, Portland State, Saint Mary’s, Northern Colorado and Idaho State, and was also 6-1 in the month in doubles. Overall this season, Henninger is 8-3 in both singles and doubles, including a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 4 singles position.
