Eagle Volleyball and Soccer Gear Up for Killin Weekend Scrimmages

Fans can catch Eastern’s women’s sports teams in action prior to the Red-White Football Game on Saturday

As part of a busy Killin Weekend at Eastern Washington University, the women’s volleyball and women’s soccer teams will host scrimmages on Saturday (April 30) that are FREE and open to the public.

Instead of a typical intra-squad scrimmage, the EWU volleyball team will welcome regional-rival Idaho for a variety of friendly competitions, starting at 11 a.m. in the EWU Sports and Recreation Center Upper Gyms (Rooms 264 and 265).

The soccer scrimmage will begin at noon, and will feature several alumni who are returning for the special weekend. In addition to all five seniors from the 2010 squad, the Eagles will welcome back two players from the 2004 Big Sky Conference Championship team.

Tiera Irby (formerly Como), who played from 2002-06, was a two-time Big Sky Defensive MVP -- the only league MVP in program history. She was Eastern’s starting goalkeeper during the memorable 2004 season, and still holds many of the EWU school records, including career saves (420) and career shutouts (12).

Jen McMullen, who was also a member of the ’04 squad, will be on hand this weekend, as will Morgan O’Friel (2005-09) and Jocelyn Bement (2005-08), who both appear in EWU’s top 10 list for career assists.

Other alumni playing in the scrimmage include Kendra Selle (2001-02), Megan Como (2006) and Lauryn Koelzer (2007-08), who is one of the top five goal scorers in EWU history.

The two teams for the soccer scrimmage will be determined based on each player’s final season with the program. Thus, there will be a “Team Even” that includes seniors from ’10, ’08, ’06, ‘04 (and so on) and “Team Odd” will have seniors from ’09, ’07, ’05, ’03… The winners will have their names inscribed on the esteemed “EWU Alumni Cup.” Team Odd has won the honor for the past two years.

Following the volleyball and soccer scrimmages, the EWU football team will close out its spring season with the Red-White Game at Roos Field at 2:05 p.m. The football scrimmage will be televised live regionally by SWX (SWX Digital 6.2 in Spokane, 25.3 in the Tri-Cities & 23.3 in the Yakima area; Comcast 115; Time Warner 306; Charter 287).

The 30th Annual Orland Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction will begin with a social hour at 4:30 p.m., followed by the dinner (6:15 p.m.), program/presentations/live auction (7:15 p.m.) and dancing (8 p.m.).
