Lexie Nelson, Tyler Harvey Named February Scholar-Athletes
Redshirt junior women’s basketball student-athlete Lexie Nelson and sophomore men's basketball student-athlete Tyler Harvey have been selected by the Eastern Washington University Athletic Department as the February Scholar-Athletes of the Month, announced Monday, Feb. 3.
Nelson is an exercise science with a 3.71 grade point average after graduating from Butte High School in Butte, Mont., in 2010. Harvey, a 2011 graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif., is majoring in communications with a 3.61 grade point average.
Nelson currently leads Eastern and ranks fourth in the Big Sky in scoring with an average of 16.6 points per game. She has reached double figures in scoring in 16 of the Eagles' 19 games, scoring at least 20 points four times. She is also one of the league's most accurate shooters, ranking third in the conference in three-point percentage (.429), fifth in free throw percentage (.850) and 15th in field goal percentage (.455), and is one of only three players in the Big Sky to rank in the top 15 in each shooting category.
Nelson helped the Eagles to four wins in January, protecting Eastern's home floor with a perfect 4-0 record in Reese Court. She averaged 16.4 points per game in January and made 40 of 44 free throws.
A transfer from Montana, Nelson played her first season for EWU in 2012-13, helping Eastern to 19 wins and a trip to the WNIT for just the second time in program history. She earned First Team All-Big Sky honors last year and was a Big Sky All-Academic selection, as well.
Harvey directed Eastern to a trio of wins in January, including a home sweep of Montana and Montana State. He averaged 21.6 points, 2.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game in the month, including 28-of-69 shots from the 3-point stripe (40 percent). He was the College Sports Madness Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after he scored 25 points in an 69-62 win over Montana and 19 in a 77-72 triumph against Montana State.
En route to what is now the 10th-best scoring night in school history with 36 points, sophomore Harvey finished a perfect 20-of-20 from the free throw line in EWU’s 90-83 win over Southern Utah on Jan. 23. He broke the previous school and conference record of 16-of-16 by set by Jason Lewis against Weber State on Jan. 27, 2001. In addition, Harvey’s 20 charity shots tied the Big Sky record and broke the school mark of 17 set by Matt Piper against Humboldt State on Dec. 28, 1982.
Harvey currently leads the Big Sky in both scoring (21.1) and three-pointers made per game (3.7), and ranks in the top 10 nationally in three-pointers made and top 30 nationally in scoring.
Harvey started the month of February by breaking a school record and eclipsing 36 points for the second time in four games. He made a school-record 10 3-pointers and totaling 38 points as the Eagles defeated Northern Colorado 94-90 in overtime Feb. 1 at Reese Court. Harvey made a 3-pointer that helped send the game into overtime, then made his record-tying 10th trey to open the extra period and give EWU the lead for good. He tied the record of 10 by Kevin Winford against New Hope on Dec. 4, 2010 and his 38 points equaled current Detroit Piston Rodney Stuckey for the sixth-most in school history.
