Cheney, Wash. — Eastern Washington University Athletics has been named a finalist in the sixth annual SoMe Social Media Awards to be held in Portland, Oregon on Thursday, May 22. The campaign, “It’s Game Day on Snapchat!” is a finalist in the “Breaking Social” and “ET Phone Home” categories.
The campaign was EWU Athletics’ inaugural Snapchat campaign chronicling the Eagles’ FCS Football Championship playoff game against Jacksonville State.
EWU Athletics was one of the first in the nation to use Snapchat in college athletics. The campaign used ground breaking strategies to measure user engagement and fan input. EWU partnered with CKSyme Media Group in Bozeman, Montana to build the strategy and goals for the campaign.
The CKSyme Media Group is also a finalist in the “Best Social Media Agency 2014” category for the same campaign.
“At the time EWU came to us about Snapchat, it wasn’t really on the horizon yet for brand use,” said Chris Syme, principal of CKSyme Media Group. “Our agency welcomed the opportunity to break new ground. EWU Athletics has a history of innovation and we were honored to work with them,” Syme said.
According to Kyle Bruce, Assistant Communications Director for EWU Athletics, the campaign was aimed at the student population.
“Our primary goal with Snapchat was to utilize the platform as a way to expose a younger demographic to the social aspect of EWU athletic contests and build engagement with our brand,” said Bruce.
The SoMe Awards include a forum where finalists will present their entries and attend keynotes by Brian Solis, author, social media pioneer, and SoMe Hall of Fame member; and Pamela Slim, speaker and award-winning author of Escape From Cubicle Nation.
Portland State University, also a member of the Big Sky Conference, is a multiple category nominee in the awards as well.
