Latest NCAA APR Report Shows Eastern is Sustaining Success in the Classroom

Men’s Cross Country leads EWU with its perfect multi-year score

For the second year in a row, the Eastern Washington University men’s cross country team was honored by the NCAA for a perfect multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR)  score of 1,000. EWU cross country was one of just five teams in the Big Sky Conference to earn the coveted public recognition award, and just one of three BSC teams with a perfect score.

The rest of the Eastern’s athletic teams also fared well in the latest APR report, which was released Wednesday (June 9) by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In all, 12 of EWU’s 14 varsity sports recorded scores higher than the national threshold of 925.

“I am very pleased with the continued academic success of our student-athletes,” said Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves. “I applaud the dedication of our student-athletes, as well as the commitment our coaches and faculty members have toward success in the classroom. This is an ongoing process and we must continue to stay focused on academic progress with each new year.”

The most recent APR report is based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years. Five EWU programs posted higher numbers in the 2008-09 report as compared to last year.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success by measuring eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. As part of an overall academic-reform effort, the Division I Board of Directors set scores of 925 and 900 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. An APR of 925 currently predicts an approximately 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), while an APR of 900 currently predicts an approximately 40 percent GSR.

High-performing teams are those that posted APR scores ranging from 976 to a perfect 1,000 over the data collection period. Specifically, teams who posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport are honored by a public recognition announcement, which EWU cross country has now received in back-to-back years.
