Annual Pro Day Features a Quartet of Eagles

Eastern players perform for scouts in hopes of securing professional football opportunities

Highlighted by the performances of All-America offensive linemen Clay DeBord and Aaron Neary, four former Eastern Washington University football players took part in testing for professional football scouts at EWU's annual Pro Day on Friday (April 1) in Cheney, Wash.

Besides speed, agility and weight-lifting, the tests included height, weight and other measurements. The former players are all hoping for possible professional football opportunities in the weeks ahead leading up to the NFL Draft in late April and subsequent free agent possibilities.

DeBord posted impressive marks of 30-0 1/2 in the vertical jump, 8-10 in the standing broad jump and times of 4.99 in the 40-yard dash and 4.38 in the 20-yard shuttle. He weighed in at 302 pounds and measured just over 6-foot-6.

"It was good, and I definitely had a good experience and put up some good numbers," said DeBord, who started a school-record 51 games as an Eagle. "Hopefully I showed well and I did a good job for the guys watching. I was happy."

"If I get drafted, I get drafted -- if I don't, I don't," added DeBord. "I'm just going to work my tail off and try to earn a spot on a roster – that's the plan. Whether I get picked up via the draft or free agency, it doesn't matter. I'm just hoping to get an opportunity."

Neary was most pleased with his bench press performance, lifting 225 pounds for a total of 26 reps. He also topped 300 pounds on the scale, measuring just over 6-foot-3 and weighing 301.

"Bench is what has gone up the most, and I thought that would be one of my better tests for sure," said Neary. "My goal was to get two more reps on top of that, but I can't complain about 26. It was a huge improvement from three months ago when I couldn't even do 20."

"I've been training for three months and building to this," the two-time All-American and All-Big Sky performer added. "I think it went well – in the end, it's an experience of a lifetime. I think I did well and I was confident, so we'll see where that takes me. If I can just get an opportunity I know I'll make something happen."

Also taking part from EWU's 2015 team was offensive lineman Cassidy Curtis, who weighed 308 and matched DeBord's height of 6-6 1/10. He had 25 reps in the bench press.
From Eastern's 2014 team, running back Quincy Forte improved all of his marks from Eastern's Pro Day a year ago. Among the improvements for the 5-foot-10, 194-pound Forte was an impressive time of 7.01 in the cone drill after turning in a 7.13 time last year.
