Kendra Hamm Sits Ninth in Heptathlon After First Day of Big Sky Championships

Junior from Spokane has 2,781 points and is on pace to set a personal record, while senior Jozie Kimes sits in 16th with 2,424 points

Junior Kendra Hamm is on pace to set a personal record in the heptathlon and rank among the best in school history after scoring 2,781 points on the first day of the Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships Wednesday (May 11) in Greeley, Colo.

The 2012 graduate of University High School in Spokane and transfer from Community Colleges of Spokane is currently in ninth place after the first four events. Senior Jozie Kimes is 16th with 2,424 points, with the final three events – long jump, javelin and 800 meters – taking place on Thursday (May 12).

Hamm scored 735 points with 15.83 time in the 100 hurdles, 712 with a high jump of 5-2 1/4, 449 with a shot put of 28-9 and 885 with a time of 25.02 in the 200 meters. Her clocking in the 200 was the second-fastest of the day among the 16 competitors.

Kimes had a time of 15.94 in the hurdles to score 722 points, scored 544 in the high jump (4-8 1/4), had 465 in the shot put (29-7 1/4) and ended the day with 693 points in the 200 (27.23).

Hamm had 4,545 points earlier this season to rank fourth in school history, scoring 2,650 points on the first day. Thus, she is 131 points ahead of that pace.

Kimes, who has been injured much of this season, scored 4,825 in 2014 to rank second all-time at EWU. Her performance was just 25 points away from the school record, and came at the league championships in 2014 where she placed sixth. The 2012 graduate of Cashmere (Wash.) High School scored 2,818 through four events in that competition.

The school record is 4,850 points set by Christie Kight in 2003. Ranked No. 3 on the EWU's all-time list with 4,566 points is Wiyanna Kramer, also in 2003.

The conclusion of the heptathlon begins at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday (May 12). The main portion of the meet starts Friday (May 13) with field events slated to start at 9 a.m. Pacific time and running events starting at 1 p.m. Saturday's (May 14) start times are 9 a.m. Pacific time for field events and 11 a.m. for running events.
