With the third-highest point total in Eastern Washington University history, junior
Kendra Hamm placed sixth in the heptathlon Thursday (May 12) at the Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships in Greeley, Colo. Senior
Jozie Kimes finished 13th.
Â
Hamm scored a total of 4,676 points, eclipsing her previous personal best of 4,545 she had earlier this season at the Buc Scoring Invite in Spokane. She improved in all seven events from that meet, and only in the long jump outdoors and high jump indoors had she recorded better marks in individual meets this season.
Â
As a result, the 2013 graduate of University High School in Spokane and transfer from Community Colleges of Spokane moved into No. 3 all-time in EWU history, coming 174 points from the school record.
Â
"Kendra put together a great heptathlon," said women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg of Hamm, who entered the final day in ninth place. "She set personal bests in nearly every event and bettered her previous high point total. She stayed consistent through the events on day two and put us on the board with three team points. I couldn't be happier for her."
Kimes, who has been injured much of this season, scored 4,151 points, well behind the 4,825 she had in 2014 to rank second all-time at EWU. That performance two years ago was just 25 points away from the school record, and came at the league championships where she placed sixth. Kimes is a 2012 graduate of Cashmere (Wash.) High School.
Â
The school record is 4,850 points set by Christie Kight in 2003. Now ranked No. 4 on the EWU's all-time list with 4,566 points is Wiyanna Kramer, also in 2003.
On Thursday, Hamm started the day with 671 points in the long jump with a 17-8 3/4 leap, scored 489 in the javelin with a 100-8 throw, and then completed the competition by scoring 735 points with a the sixth-best time in the 800 meters of 2:26.68. Kimes scored 606 in the long jump (16-11 3/4), 504 in the javelin (103-2) and 617 in the 800 (2:36:20).
Â
On Wednesday's first day, Hamm scored 735 points with 15.83 time in the 100 hurdles, 712 with a high jump of 5-2 1/4, 449 with a shot put of 28-9 and 885 with a time of 25.02 in the 200 meters. Her clocking in the 200 was the second-fastest of the day among the 16 competitors. Kimes had a time of 15.94 in the hurdles to score 722 points, scored 544 in the high jump (4-8 1/4), had 465 in the shot put (29-7 1/4) and ended the day with 693 points in the 200 (27.23).
