The Eastern Washington University cross country teams travel to Ogden, Utah, for the Big Sky Championships this Saturday, Oct. 28.
"The team has been working hard all year and is ready to take that training and see what we are capable of this weekend in the Big Sky Championship," Shane said. "For some of them, this is the culmination of an entire career worth of training, with each subsequent year the body gets stronger and more capable of running faster."
The event will be hosted by Weber State on the Riverside Golf Course. The women's race will be 5,000 meters, while the men race on an 8,000-meter course.
The women's race will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time followed by the men's event at 10:45 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m.
So far this season, sophomore Colton Johnsen has been the top finisher for the Eagles in every meet. Last year at the championship meet, he finished 47th with a time of 26:27. Other returners include Logan Stahl (58th, 26:47) and Austin Oser (71st, 27:21).
Returning athletes for the women who competed last year at the championships include sophomore Kaili Keefe, who was the second-best finisher on the women's side, placing 26th with a time of 18:27. Other returners include Kari Hamilton (62nd, 19:14), Carli Corpus (51st, 19:16) and Gracie Ledwith (75th, 20:05).
"The team is feeling loose and calm," Shane said. "We know we have done all that we can control to prepare, and no amount of stressing about the race will allow us to run any faster. It will no doubt be exciting as cross country is the only sport where all 12 teams can line up on the same course on the same day and measure themselves against each other. I know we will have some very good performances out there this weekend."
Eastern finished well in last year's championship with graduated Sarah Reiter finishing second overall. The women's team placed sixth out of the 12 schools with 170 points, while the men's team finished seventh with 194 points.
Northern Arizona swept the championship, taking first place on both the men's and women's side.
Last year's top finisher for the EWU men's team was senior James Breen finishing in 32nd place with a 26:04 time. Just a few seconds behind Breen was senior Matthew Hommel, who finished 34th in 26:07.
Making the trip to Ogden will be the top Eagle student athletes from both the men's and women's side with seven of them contributing to final team scoring.
