Men’s Tennis Signs a Top Five National Player from the Philippines

Manuel Balce III will join the Eagles’ Squad in 2018

CHENEY, Wash. – Head coach Steve Clark announced the newest addition to the Eastern Washington University men's tennis program on Nov. 15. Manuel Balce III has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Eagles starting in the fall of 2018 and will be added to the 2018-19 official roster.

Clark sees Balce fitting in with the team nicely. "I am really excited to have Manuel join us this year. The culture has been established – the close-knit team unity, the grit, work ethic, passion for the process, and commensurate achievements, such as players seeded and regionally ranked in the top 20, being a force in the Big Sky, and having a national schedule."

Manuel Balce III currently resides in Pasig City, Philippines. He will be coming to Cheney, Wash., following the success he has had on a national scale. Balce is a Philippines Junior Davis Cup member and is currently ranked number five nationally. His highest national ranking is number two in the Philippines.

"Manuel will contribute significantly to the team's upward growth as a player who embodies what we have going on in terms of success on the court, passion for the game, all court ability with tons of weapons, and just a great a young man with humility, respect for others, and a solid work ethic," said Clark. "I have had numerous players from the Philippines or with Filipino background in both my coaching a top 16 NCAA team in Southern California, and currently with Scott Paz on the team. They have super work ethic and respect for excellence."

"Manuel, a member of the Philippines Junior Davis Cup squad, is a top five national Filipino player and has significant international experience. He has a ton of upside – A former number one player I coached was ranked in the top 75 in the NCAA and Manuel has more tools than that player did. Great stuff looms ahead for Manuel," said Clark.

Returning for the 2018-19 season with Balce will be Martin Bats, Jeremy Field, Devon Kashishian, Jeremy Mueller, and Garner Sears. For more information about Eastern Washington's men's tennis team, follow @EWUAthletics on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
