Senior
Anandae Clark and freshman
Keshun McGee are new conference champions, as they highlighted the second day of competition for the Eastern Washington University indoor track and field team at the Big Sky Indoor Championship on Friday (Feb. 24).
Through six scored events, the EWU women's team ranks fifth with 23 points, just one point behind third place Weber State. The Eastern men are also ranked fifth with 21 points. Montana leads the women's competition with 47 points, while Montana State leads the men with 43 points.
"This is a great meet that challenges you on many levels," said men's head coach
Stan Kerr. "Our athletes responded in championship fashion that reflects the competitive character of this team."
Men's Top Performers
Securing the men's first title of the Big Sky Championship was freshman
Keshun McGee in the long jump. His mark of 25-0 was nearly eight inches longer than the next best jump, and ranks second all-time in the EWU history books. He will compete in the triple jump on Saturday (Feb. 25).
Overall, three Eagle athletes scored in the high jump and long jump combined. Sophomore
Chez Jackson continued this success by scoring in fourth place with a mark of 6-8. In the shot put, junior
Aaron Cunningham was the only EWU thrower to score, finishing fourth overall with a throw of 56-0 1/2.
Sophomore
Aaron Pullin finished the men's heptathlon, completing the seven-event competition in 13
th place. His best finish was in the pole vault, tying in fifth with a mark of 14-0.
With a personal best time of 6.88 in the 60-meter dash, sophomore
Jonah Mathews qualified for the finals tomorrow.
Women's Top Performers
Senior
Anandae Clark brought home the women's pole vault title for the first time in her career, after taking second place back in the 2015 indoor championship. Her vault of 13-7 shattered her previous personal best by six inches, and ranks third all-time in conference history. Her mark also moves her up from fourth all-time at EWU to second all-time.
"The championship is something I have been trying to get for a while," said
Anandae Clark. "I came out to win, and that was my goal the whole time. I wanted the 10 points for the team, so I was telling myself to just be calm and you will be fine."
Sophomore
Elizabeth Prouty and senior
Erin Clark rounded-out the big three of Eastern women's pole vaulters with fourth and fifth place performances, respectively. Prouty recorded a mark of 12-9, surpassing her previous personal best and giving her the eighth-best height in EWU history.
Erin Clark finished the event with a vault of 12-5 1/4.
In the weight throw, junior
Paris Flenoy scored for the Eagles by placing eighth with a personal best mark of 54-2 3/4.
Senior
Rebecca Tarbert qualified for a finals appearance in the 60, posting the fourth-best time of 7.64.
Day three of the Big Sky Championship begins at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday (Feb. 25) and will conclude the meet. A
live stream of the final day will be available.
Comments from Men's Head Coach Stan Kerr
"
Keshun McGee introduced himself to the Big Sky Conference with a phenomenal performance in the long jump. He won the long jump, and narrowly missed making the top-16 in the country that would compete for a national championship. The team and coaches are proud of Keshun, and are already looking forward to him competing in the triple jump tomorrow."
"Another narrow miss was
Aaron Cunningham, who placed fourth, just one spot from being All-Conference."
"The evolution of speed in this conference is almost staggering. We had performances by
Jose Garcia and
Dawson Lack in the 60-meter dash that would have won in recent years; however, they were not fast enough to advance to tomorrow's final. However,
Jonah Mathews had a season best time in the 60 and will be competing in tomorrow's final."
"A special treat in today's competition was welcoming our women's basketball team to the meet. Many thanks to Coach
Wendy Schuller for arranging her schedule to help cheer on the Eagles."
Comments from Women's Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
"What a great day two at the BSC Championship. The vaulters came through and outperformed. All season long I have been saying they are the strength of the team with their depth and competitive experience.
Anandae Clark was our first Big Sky Conference champion of the meet winning the pole vault with a personal record. Teammates
Elizabeth Prouty and
Erin Clark finished fourth and fifth, respectively. That's a big chunk of points that the team needed."
"I am very proud of
Paula Gil-Echevarria,
Sophie Bowles,
Carli Corpus, and
Kaili Keefe in our distance medley's sixth place finish. For three freshman that have never ran at altitude and a senior in her last indoor relay, I could not be happier for them. Keefe's 1,600 final leg was amazing."
"
Maegan McCurdy, another freshman, had a huge personal record in the long jump, and scored EWU's final point of the day with her eighth place finish."
"We had athletes do well and perform better than they ever have, but were unable to score. For the most part they are young, so the future is bright."
