Eastern Hosts the 46th Annual Pelluer Invitational This Week

This marks the first home track meet for the Eagles since Dec. 2

NOTE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the pole vault competitions WILL NOT take place at the EWU Arevalo Student Mall. Instead, they will take place Saturday at Roos Field, with men starting at noon and the women following.

SCHEDULE

After months of traveling, the Eastern Washington University track and field team stays home this week, hosting the 46th Annual Pelluer Invitational in Cheney, Wash., this Friday and Saturday (April 13-14).

The events on Friday include the discus, starting at 2 p.m. for both the women and men at the throws area at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center.

The remainder of the meet will be held the next day (Saturday, April 14), with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events beginning at 1 p.m. All events except the throws will take place that day at Roos Field in Cheney.

"It is always great to compete on your home turf and the Pelluer Invitational gives our athletes the opportunity to do just do that," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "There have been some outstanding performances at this meet and hopefully we will get some more this weekend."

"Honoring the legacy of Arnie Pelluer has always been significant for us," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "A lot of the credit goes to Jerry Martin who established the Pelluer Invitational to honor Arnie and his contributions to EWU's track and field history."

The Eagles will feature eight top-3 performers in the Big Sky Conference during the meet. On the men's side, junior Larry Still is the Big Sky leader in the pole vault with a mark of 16-7 1/2. Sophomore Tim Beard is second in the hammer with a mark of 189-9. Senior Logan Stahl is also second in the 800 with a time of 1:51.55.

For the women, freshman Alexis Rolan is the Big Sky leader in the 100 meters with a time of 11.65. Senior Rebecca Tarbert is second in the same event with a time of 11.98. In the 10,000 meters, senior Kari Hamilton is second (34:55.83) and senior Macey Weitz is third in the pole vault (12-9 1/2).

Last Time Out
The Eagles competed at Spokane Falls Community College in the WAR XI last week on Friday and Saturday (April 6-7). The men took first out of the 18 teams competing while the women finished second out of 19.

Eastern brought home seven first-place titles throughout the meet. The women's 4x100 relay team consisting of freshman Alexis Rolan, sophomore Sophie Bowles, freshman Bella Millsap and senior Rebecca Tarbert, took first with a time of 48.91. Junior Madison Doepker took first in the hammer with a throw of 166-6.

Sophomore Dawson Lack took first in the 100 meter race with a time of 11.03. Senior Logan Stahl also finished first in the 800 with a time of 1:51.55.

In the field, senior Trenton Osborn finished first in the long jump with a mark of 21-6. Scott Miller also took first in the shot put with a throw of 49-4 1/4. Sophomore Tim Beard earned first in the hammer with a mark of 186-9.

More comments from women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On events: "Our strongest events should be the sprints, throws and pole vault. We have such an amazing group of vaulters, and the discus will also be another event where we have some pretty competitive athletes."

On other teams: "We will see some new faces at the meet this year. Portland State University will be bringing their team and Gonzaga, who hasn't been to the Pelluer in a while, will be back. Portland State is known for their sprinters and jumpers and Gonzaga has one of the top distance programs in the west, so those event areas will get pretty competitive."

On sprinters: "The sprints and 4x100 relay will be exciting to watch as those athletes continue to work to get some NCAA West Regional times. If we don't have a lot of depth in some events, we still tend to have strong individuals in those areas so it will be great to see what we can do."

More comments from men's head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On new changes this year: "This year's edition of the meet will take on some new character and will make for a lifetime of memories. Portland State's team will be here for the first time, and we've altered the traditional lineup to include a couple of relays that will feature numerous talented athletes from the teams that will be here."

On elements of weather: "If memory serves me correctly, one sports writer some years back called this meet the 'Mosquito Open.' We hope that's not the case, but feel we're ready for anything that comes our way this week."
