Eastern Alum to Compete at World Cross Country Championships
Suver one of six senior women selected to represent USA in Poland
Mattie Suver (formerly Bridgmon), a former
standout runner for the Eastern Washington University cross country
and track and field teams, will represent USA at the 40th IAAF
(International Association of Athletics Federations) World Cross
Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Sunday (March
USA Track & Field is sending 24 athletes to the meet in four different divisions, including senior and junior divisions for each gender. Suver will be one of the six American competitors for the senior women division. 47 countries are scheduled to attend, such as distance powerhouses Kenya and Ethiopia. The USA women were third overall at the 2011 Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain.
While at Eastern, Suver reached the NCAA National Championships in both cross country and outdoor track and field. She was 64th at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships and 13th in the 5,000 at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, respectively. Suver is also EWU’s most recent Big Sky champion in a women’s distance event, as she captured the 2008 BSC crown in the 5,000 indoors. She placed second in the 5,000 and third in the 10,000 at the 2008 BSC Outdoor Championships as well.
Suver’s name can be found often in Eastern’s all-time top ten lists. Indoors, she ranks second in both the 3,000 (9:48.87) and 5,000 (17:27.63). Outdoors, she is the current school record holder in the 5,000 (16:33.60) and also ranks fourth in the 1,500 (4:32.21) and fifth in the 10,000 (36:58.52).
After completing her bachelor’s degree at EWU, Suver transferred to the University of Oregon as a graduate student in human physiology, where she became an NCAA All-American in cross country (40th) and outdoor track and field (7th, 10,000).
The World Championships begin Sunday at 4 a.m. PST (Noon- Central European Time).

UPDATE: Suver placed 26th at the IAAF World Cross Country
Championships in Poland, running a time of 25:41 on the 8,000-meter
course. She was the third finisher for the USA senior women,
helping them to a fourth-place finish.
