Eagles Compete in a Pair of Meets in California

With five weeks left before Big Sky Conference Championships, Eagles have already met the qualifying standards 36 times

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will split and compete at the 52nd Annual Mt. Sac Relays/Combined Events in Walnut, Calif., on Thursday-Saturday (April 15-17) and at the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday (April 17).

Most of the Eagles will compete in Walnut, Calif. On the men’s side, Brody Faire, David Howard, Zach Nielsen and Alex Smyth will compete at both meets, and Jordan Curnutt will compete in Long Beach.

For the women, Mari Bingham, Erica Chaney, Michelle Coombs, Emilee Deishl, Emily Jacobsen, Nicole Luckenbach, Jasmine Stray, Vania Tauvela and Ana Zapien will compete at both meets, while Kelly Downey will compete only at the Long Beach Invitational.

At the Mt. Sac. Relays/Combined Events, the meet will begin Thursday with the 3000-meter steeplechase and 10,000 meters. On Friday, field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events start at 1 p.m.

At the Long Beach Invitational, field events begin at 9 a.m. and running events start at 10 a.m.

At the WAR 3 (Washington versus Oregon, Montana and Idaho) on April 10, Nicole Luckenbach had a winning throw of 199-2 to break her own school record and move her into ninth in NCAA Division I and sixth on the NCAA Division I West Region best list. To compete at the NCAA Division I West Regionals in Austin, Texas, on May 27-29, student-athletes need to rank in the top 48 in their event.

A 2005 graduate of Snohomish (Wash.) High School, her throw of 193-0 on Friday at the 39th Annual Pelluer Invitational broke school, meet and stadium records. She broke her own school record that she set last year at the Big Sky Conference Championships with a mark of 191-11. The previous Pelluer record was set by Gabby Midles in 2009 with a throw of 185-11 and the old Woodward Field record of 183-7 was set by Ashley Jones of Montana State in 2006.

Eastern athletes have already met the qualifying standards 36 times for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which take place May 12-15 in Ogden, Utah. The list includes 20 for the men and 16 for the women.
