Eagles Have Last Chance in Idaho

Eastern competes at the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center before heading to the Big Sky Conference Championships

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will head to the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center in Moscow, Idaho, to compete at the Vandal Collegiate Friday (Feb. 19) before heading to the Big Sky Conference Championships in Bozeman Mont., on Feb. 26-27.

In Idaho, running events begin at 4 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles. Field events start at 3 p.m. with the men's long jump. This is the last opportunity for the Eagles to meet the qualifying standards for the conference championships.

The Eagles will compete next weekend at the BSC Championships in Bozeman, Mont. Eastern has met the league qualifying standards 47 times -- 24 for the men and 23 for the women.

Current Big Sky leaders in their respective events are Nicole Luckenback (weight throw/60-8 1/2) and Krystal Deyo (60m/7.58 converted from 55m).

Eagles who rank in the top three in their respective events are Erica Chaney (shot put/2nd/48-0 3/4), Shene Davis (long jump/2nd/19-8 1/4), David Howard (shot put/2nd/55-7 1/2) and Kyle King (5,000m/3rd/14:149.81).

In the men's high jump, the Eagles currently have three men ranked in the top seven. Defending Big Sky outdoor champion Stephen Praast is third (6-8 1/4), 2009 indoor winner Adam Stewart is fourth (6-8) and Cody Fishel is seventh (6-6 3/4).

The Eagles competed Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13) at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., where King had the third-fastest time in school history in the 5,000 meters.

He finished 39th out of 82 competitors with a time of 14:19.81 to qualify for the conference championships. That time ranks him third all-time in EWU's school history behind John Timeus (14:07.03, set in 2006) and school-record holder Curtis Suver (14:03.64, set in 2008).

With a time of 8.48 in the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Steven Warner now ranks fourth in school history. The school record is 8.0 set in 1980 by Greg Rooney.
