After breaking school record, Luckenbach competes Saturday at the BSC Championships in the weight throw
Senior Nicole Luckenbach of the Eastern Washington University track and field team was named Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week for her school-record performance on Feb. 20 at the Vandal Collegiate.
"It was really exciting to see Nicole awarded Athlete of the Week," said head women's track and field coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "It was nice to see her recognized for her effort, and the results of those efforts are coming her way."
Luckenbach set a new school record in the weight throw with a mark of 61-11 3/4 to break Jamie Martin's throw of 60-9 1/2 set in 2002. Luckenbach throw was 5 1/2 inches over the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships of 61-6 1/4.
She will compete Saturday (Feb. 27) at 10:30 a.m. Pacific time at the Big Sky Championships in the weight throw and is looking for her first conference indoor title. She is currently ranked first in the conference in that event. Ranked second is Nicole Elliott of Northern Arizona with a toss of 60-5.
"She is gradually getting better each meet," said Mecklenburg. "We wouldn't be surprised if she breaks her own school record. It is going to be a good competition for Nicole."
Last year at the conference championships, she finished fourth with a mark of 57-5 3/4.
Outdoors, Luckenbach won the conference title and holds the school record in the hammer with a career-best throw of 191-11.
