Luckenbach ranks 16th on the NCAA Division I National Team Rankings after her performance at the BSC Championships
Senior Nicole Luckenbach was named the 2010 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet for her performance at the Big Sky Conference Championships on Feb. 27 in Bozeman, Mont.
The Field Athlete of the Meet award was nominated and voted on by the league's coaches for her efforts in the conference championships.
"I am really excited and thrilled for Nicole to have won that award," said head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "It is a very difficult award to win. I am very proud because that throw was a huge mark and it was nice to see the other coaches recognize that."
Luckenbach had a career-best mark of 65-9 to win the weight throw and set a new fieldhouse record. She broke the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse record of 62-6 set by Northern Arizona's Anna Soderburg in 1996.
Luckenbach's mark also broke her own school record that she set earlier this season with a throw of 61-11 3/4 to meet the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. That effort broke the school record of 60-9 1/2 set in 2002 by Jamie Martin and earned Luckenbach Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Last year at the conference championships, Luckenbach was fourth with a mark of 57-5 3/4.
Luckenbach is ranked 16th out of 34 in the weight throw in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I National Team Rankings. A minimum of 14 competitors will be selected to compete at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 12-13.
"She is right on the bubble so we will see if she makes it in," added Mecklenburg.
