Eagles Face Off with Grizzlies and Bobcats in Missoula

Eastern travels to Montana to compete in the Al Manuel Invitational on Saturday April 2

The Eastern Washington University track and field team will travel to Missoula, Mont., this Saturday (April 2) to compete in the Al Manuel Invitational – a dual scoring meet between the Eagles, Grizzlies and Bobcats. This will be the first meet of the outdoor season in which Eastern will take a full squad to compete.

“There is always one goal when we compete at the Al Manuel … and that is to win,” said head women’s coach Marcia Mecklenburg. “This is the only scoring meet other than the conference championships, and it’s important for us to make an early statement.”

In last year’s Al Manuel, the Eastern men defeated the both Griz (102-93.5) and the Bobcats (137-63). The women’s team outscored Montana State (95.5-93.5) but lost to Montana (105.5-93.5).

“The Al Manuel is a long-standing tradition where we are able to compete against two classic rivals,” said Mecklenburg.

At the Stanford Invitational on March 25-26, a total of five Big Sky Conference-qualifying standards were met by Eastern athletes. Included was senior Erica Chaney who won the elite section of the shot put with a mark of 48-2 1/2. She is ranked second in league standings. Chaney also placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 154 feet, which ranks her second in the league and bettered her previous qualifying mark.

The defending league champion in the 400 meters, junior Brad Wall, opened his outdoor season at the Stanford Invitational with a Big Sky Conference qualifying time of 47.88 to win the event. He currently ranks second in the league standings. Wall also competed in the 200 meters, running a time of 21.18 to rank him third in the conference rankings.

A total of 13 Big Sky Conference qualifying standards have been met by Eastern athletes thus far this outdoor season.

“We are hoping to get a break in the weather so we can have some great individual and team performances,” said men’s head coach Stan Kerr.
