Eagle men among the top of Big Sky schools honored
The Eastern Washington University men’s and women’s track and field teams were recently named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic team for the 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons.
“We are very excited that both teams have been recognized on a national level,” said head women’s track coach Marcia Mecklenburg. “This is a credit to our athletic advisors, who have played a huge role in our academic success.”
The Eagle men tied Montana State University for the highest GPA among the five Big Sky Conference schools honored, earning a combined GPA of 3.18.
The women’s team compiled a team GPA of 3.32, joining three other BSC schools on the prestigious list.
“We love national recognition,” said head men’s track coach Stan Kerr. “It’s great to be noticed in an area of student-athletics that usually stays behind the scenes.”
In order to earn this distinction, a team must produce a GPA of 3.0 or better. A total of 151 women’s teams and 73 men’s teams across the nation earned All-Academic status for the 2010 seasons.
In addition to the national acknowledgment, a total of 38 EWU track and field athletes were named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the spring quarter, proving their continued success in the classroom.
“Academic success is something we’ve stressed in our program for years and it’s something we will continue to stress,” said Mecklenburg.
