Last Chance to Qualify as Eagles Head Back to Seattle; Chaney Earns BSC Field Athlete of the Week

Eastern competes in Flotrack Husky Classic Feb. 11-12 in final regular season competition before Big Sky Conference Championships.

As the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships approach, the Eastern Washington University track teams will travel back to a familiar venue on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 11-12) to compete at the University of Washington’s Flotrack Husky Classic for a final attempt to hit qualifying standards.

So far, 25 qualifying standards have been met by Eastern competitors. Seven of those marks were attained last weekend (Feb. 5) at the Bronco Open in Nampa, Idaho.

Senior Erica Chaney is well on her way to Pocatello, Idaho, for the conference championships Feb. 25-26, as the Spokane, Wash., native has met qualifying standards in both the weight throw and the shot put. She was named BSC field athlete of the week after her remarkable performance last weekend at the Bronco open where she broke the school record in the shot put with a mark of 51-7 3/4. She broke the 20-year-old record (50-10) previously set by Nancy Kuiper in 1991. Chaney currently leads the BSC by over two feet.

Although her metric mark of 15.74 meters did not meet the automatic standard of 16.90, women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg hopes her mark will rank high enough to garner an at-large berth. Those berths are given to participants at the end of the regular season in order to fill a minimum 14-person field in the event.

“I was really excited for her,” said women’s head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. “She has trained hard for five years. She has wanted this since her freshman year.”

The Flotrack Husky Classic will begin Friday night at 6 p.m., with the distance medley relays and 5,000-meter runs. The 3,000-meter runs will take off at 8 a.m., on Saturday and field events will follow at 9:30 a.m., with the women’s high jump.

A broadcast of the meet will be streaming live at flotrack.org, starting Friday night and continuing throughout Saturday’s event. Live results can also be found at http://www.gohuskies.com/livestats/c-track/021111/index.htm.

Eagle Notes

Chaney Inches Toward NCAA Berth with School Record

Erica Chaney inched her way toward a possible berth in the NCAA Championships as she broke the school record in the shot put Feb. 5 at the Bronco Open in Nampa, Idaho. With a toss of 51-7 3/4, Chaney surpassed the 20-year-old record of 50-11, which was set by Nancy Kuiper in 1991. That throw may have also earned the senior from Spokane, Wash. (Gonzaga Prep '06), a trip to College Station, Texas, to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12. She is currently ranked 25th in the nation.

Distance Medley Relay Moves up on EWU’s All-time Best List

The men's distance medley relay made a mark in the record books Jan. 28 at the UW Invitational as four underclassmen combined to run a time of 10:06.28 to place them second on EWU's all-time best list. The team consisted of freshman Collin Green, freshman Tim Pettit, sophomore Drake DaPonte and sophomore Simon Sorenson. They trail Joshua Arnold, Branden Fuller, Bruce Jackson and Casey Kellogg, who combined in 2003 to run a school-record time of 10:03.94.

Wall Earns Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week

Junior Brad Wall was named Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 18, after his performance at the UW Indoor Preview Jan. 15.The Vancouver, Wash., native ran away with a first-place finish in his first 2011 appearance in the 400 meters. His time of 48.23 was a personal best for the junior and was good enough to qualify him for the conference championships.

Double Duty

Multiple athletes will compete in two events at the indoor conference championships Feb. 25-26 in Pocatello, Idaho. Junior Brad Wall will compete in the 200 and 400. Senior Erica Chaney has qualified in both the shot put and the weight throw. Sophomore Elise Jepsen will try to place in both the high jump and the triple jump.
