2012-13: Indoor: Nielsen broke the 60-foot plateau twice in the weight throw during the indoor season as he placed fifth at the BSC Indoor Championships with a throw of 61-4 to rank fourth in school history. He also had a toss of 61-0 at the Idaho Open to place second. Prior to breaking 60-feet, Nielsen’s next best throw was 59-9, which came at the Idaho Vandal Collegiate. Outdoor: He placed fourth in the hammer throw at the BSC Outdoor Championships with a mark of 187-8. Nielsen just missed scoring points for the Eagles in the discus at the conference meet, getting off a throw of 155-9 to place ninth. He reached his personal best of 191-1 in the hammer at the Duane Hartman Invite, ranking him 10th all-time at Eastern. Nielsen was selected to the spring Big Sky All-Academic team.
2011-12- Indoor: His
season-best weight throw of 59-7 at the BSC Indoor Championships
put him on the podium for a third place finish. That mark ranks
Nielsen seventh all-time at Eastern. Outdoor: He placed
fourth at the BSC Outdoor Championships in the hammer with a throw
of 183-3. Nielsen also placed 12th in the discus at the BSC Outdoor
Championships with a toss of 149-6. He reached a personal best of
184-11 in the hammer throw at the Duane Hartman Invite, placing
fifth. His season-best discus throw came at the Pelluer Invite,
where he hit a mark of 163-0 to place third.
Nielsen placed fifth at the BSC Indoor Championships in the weight
throw with a mark of 56-1. His season best came at the Bronco Open,
where he got off a throw of 57-4 to place third. Outdoor:
2009-10: Indoor: Redshirted. Outdoor: He placed 10th in the discus at the BSC Outdoor Championships with a mark of 150-8. Nielsen had his best throw in the discus at the WSU Cougar Invitational, tossing 164-3 and placing fourth. His season-best mark in the hammer was at the Beach Invitational with a throw of 147-9.
High School: Nielsen lettered all four years in track as well as three times in football. He was captain of both teams his senior year and went on to break the Lindbergh school record in the discus with a throw of 168-9. He placed 16tth in the discus at the WIAA 3A State Championships his junior year. He was a two-time Seamount Champion in the discus and a two-time state qualifier. His best mark in the shot put was 51-0 which came at the Seamount League Meet. In football, Nielsen was First-Team All Seamount League as a linebacker and offensive lineman. He also was an All-State linebacker and played in the 3A/4A West All State Football East vs. West game.
Personal: Exercise Science major. Born 6/28/91 in Renton, Wash. His parents are Dennis and Penny Nielsen. His cousin Joann Garrett is an Eastern graduate.
