Earlywine on Demissie: "Abebe simply has to learn to play harder over extended periods. He's blessed with a gift of his ability to pass the ball and handle the ball for a player 6-5. He literally can play the point. He can guard both guards and forwards and he's a good shooter when he's disciplined with his shot. He gained 18 pounds during his redshirt season and gained an unbelievable amount of strength and cut his body fat. He simply has to mature mentally and become much more focused when he comes onto the floor. Although Abebe didn't post big scoring numbers in high school, his versatility was really attractive to us. We were impressed that he was willing to play a role on an outstanding state championship team. Abebe's high school coach compares him to Kyle Weaver from Washington State (now in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder) as a jack-of-all-trades type of player who simply does what it takes for his team to win."
2008-09: Redshirted, but did play in EWU's exhibition games. He had a rebound in four minutes versus Carroll (11/1/08) and scored six points with a rebound and an assist versus Puget Sound (11/8/08) in a 56-42 victory.
High School: Graduated from Rainier Beach High School in 2008. Averaged 7.1 points per game as a senior to lead the Vikings to a 29-1 record and perfect 16-0 mark in the Metro League South Division. Rainier Beach won the WIAA State 3A title his senior season, winning its final 27 games of the season after losing to Franklin 95-90 in its third game of the year. The Vikings beat Lakes 53-45 in the championship game.
