No tickets remain for this Saturday’s game versus Portland State at Roos Field, where EWU should break season attendance record
For the third time in Eastern Washington University’s four home football games this fall, this Saturday’s (Oct. 29) Big Sky Conference game versus Portland State is officially sold out.
A crowd in excess of 8,600 is expected on Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day at “The Inferno,” where Eastern is 10-1 since its red Sprinturf surface was installed a year ago. Earlier this season, games versus Montana State (10,422 on Sept. 24) and Northern Colorado (8,742) were officially sellouts. A crowd of 7,427 was on hand versus Weber State on Oct. 1. All three attendance figures rank among the top 13 crowds in stadium history – the MSU and UNC games are the top attended home games not involving the University of Montana.
Eastern is on pace to break the school’s single season attendance record set in 2006 when an average of 7,116 attended five home games. Currently, Eastern is averaging 8,863 fans per game.
Saturday’s game begins at 1:05 p.m. Pacific time and will be televised in the Spokane area and throughout Eastern Washington on SWX (SWX Digital 6.2 in Spokane, 25.3 in the Tri-Cities & 23.3 in the Yakima area; Comcast 115; Time Warner 306; Charter 287, Cable One 466). It will also be carried in the Portland area on Comcast SportsNet (channel 37/HD 737).
The radio broadcast of the game, featuring play-by-play announcer Larry Weir, may be heard on 700-AM ESPN "The Ticket", via the web at www.espnnorthwest.com and via iPhone application (search for “Spokane Radio” and download the free app).
With more than 2,000 temporary bleachers added, a record crowd of 11,702 attended the 2010 meeting against Montana, won by the Eagles 36-27 in the debut of “The Inferno.” Crowds of 11,583 in 2006, 10,830 in 2008 and 10,754 in 2004 attended the Eastern versus Montana showdowns that were all won by the Grizzlies. Eastern’s top 16 all-time single game attendance figures at Roos Field have come from 2005-11. Including 2011, 11 of the top averages for single season attendance have come in the last 12 seasons. In 2010, Eastern averaged 6,473 fans at Roos Field to rank as the sixth-most in school history.
This is the 45th year the current stadium (formerly named Woodward Field) has been in use, and Eastern’s 38-7 win over Southwest Texas State on Sept. 21, 1996, was the 100th Eastern game at the facility. The team’s 24-7 victory over UC-Davis on Nov. 19, 2005, at the fog-shrouded stadium was EWU’s 100th win. Eastern has a 122-56 record (68.5 percent) in 178 games at Roos Field since 1967.
Eastern is 56-18 (75.7 percent) in the past 11+ seasons at Roos Field, with a nine-game winning streak snapped in a 36-21 loss to Montana State on Sept. 24, 2011 (the school record is 21 set from 1935-40). The Eagles had a nine-game home winning streak snapped against Sacramento State on Oct. 21, 2000, when the Hornets made a 23-yard field goal with no time remaining. The Eagles were 4-0 in 1999 and 6-0 in 1997. In 1998, the Eagles were 3-1 at Roos Field with the lone loss a 30-27 overtime setback to Portland State, when the Eagles missed a 25-yard field goal that could have won it with one second left.
