Eagles Top Wildcats 5-2

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis took a big step forward to making the Big Sky Conference Tournament with a 5-2 victory over the second-place Weber State Wildcats Friday (April 9) at the Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash.

The Eagles won four of six singles matches and won all three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. All but one singles match went two sets as Julian Sanchez was tested by Spencer Marchant. Sanchez shutout Marchant in the first set 6-0, but Marchant stormed back and took the second set 6-1. Sanchez was able to secure the win with a 6-1 outing in the third set.

"The guys played well today," said head coach Darren Haworth. "We really needed the win today in a big way and I am glad we took care of business. We need to do the same thing tomorrow against Northern Arizona."

The win snapped a six-match losing streak and improved the Eagles' record to 6-11 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky. Eastern will look to get another important Big Sky victory tomorrow against Northern Arizona, with match time set for 2 p.m.
