The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team will take on local rival Gonzaga this Thursday (March 4) at the Thorpe Fieldhouse on the EWU campus. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
The Eagles enter the match 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky. The Eagles are currently tied for fifth in the Big Sky with Weber State and are coming off a 6-1 victory over the Idaho State Bengals on Feb. 26.
The Bulldogs are also 4-5 overall on the season and were 4-3 winners against the Eagles in the first match-up between the two schools on Feb. 7 in Spokane, Wash. Gonzaga is coming off a 7-0 sweep of Northern Colorado on Feb. 21 and a 6-1 victory over Lewis-Clark State on Feb. 27.
"We are looking for a little revenge this week after they got us on their place earlier in the season," said head coach Darren Haworth. "If we compete well we should be in for a good battle. We have been continuously making adjustments in our lineup and I feel we are as strong as ever right now."
The match on the Thursday will be the last home match for some time for the Eagles as they hit the road for five-straight road matches - beginning with No. 23 ranked Washington on March 12. The Eagles won't return home until April 9 when they take on Weber State.
Movin' Up: Eagle senior Nico Riego de Dios is currently fifth all-time at Eastern with 38 career singles wins, and needs just two more to move into fourth all-time. Former teammate Daniel Pez (2007-09) is currently in fourth with 39 career singles wins.
Brazilian Duo: Fernando Mussolini and Flavio Malagutti, both true freshmen from Brazil, have hit the ground running this season and have amassed a 14-3 overall record in singles.
Mussolini leads all Eagles in singles wins with a 8-1 overall record. Malagutti has the third-most wins on the team with a 6-2 record. Both are also a perfect 3-0 in Big Sky play.
Three Of A Kind: Chad Henninger, Malagutti and Mussolini all went 3-0 in their first three singles matches of the season.
All three picked up their third win Feb. 7 at Gonzaga, and did so in impressive fashion. In No. 3 singles, Mussolini dropped his first set 4-6 to Roman Dojcak, but stormed back to win the next two sets by a 6-3 score.
In the No. 4 singles spot, Henninger lost a close first set 6-7 to Scott Sullivan, but responded with a close 7-6 victory in the second set and pulled away in the third set with a 6-2 final score.
Like the others, Malagutti dropped his first set in the No. 6 singles spot against Jake Davis, but ended up tying things up by winning the second set 6-3. Malagutti and Davis battled in the third set, and Malagutti emerged with a 13-11 victory.
First time: Eagles freshmen Kyle Koetje, Mussolini, and Malagutti picked up their first singles wins of their career Jan. 31 against Lewis-Clark State.
Mussolini, playing as the No. 3 singles player, defeated Oliver Sindayigaya by the score of 6-3, 7-5. He also teamed-up with partner Julian Sanchez to earn a doubles victory.
Stefan Simikic picked up his first singles victory as an Eagle. Simikic transferred from Boise State, where he posted a 1-2 singles record last season in limited action.
