Eagles Sweep Weekend Matches against Whitman and Whitworth

After defeating nationally-ranked Whitman on Saturday, Eagles cruise past Whitworth in late evening match Sunday

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team evened its season record this weekend with a pair of victories against Whitman and Whitworth. Eastern, now 2-2 in the 2012 campaign, topped Whitman, 5-2, on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Cheney, Wash., before blanking Whitworth, 7-0, on Sunday (Jan. 29) in north Spokane.

Eastern's first victory on the weekend came against a team ranked 29th nationally in NCAA Division III, and No. 7 in the West region.

The Eagles captured the doubles point against Whitman with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. In the top spot, sophomore James Russell and junior Kyle Koetje bested Matt Tesmond and Conor Holton-Burke, who are ranked 20th in NCAA Division III, 8-6.

Sophomore Mario Navarro and senior Stefan Simikic solidified the doubles point for EWU after winning a tiebreaker at No.3 against Whitworth's Steven Roston and Colton Malesovas.

In singles, Navarro won in straight sets at No. 2, as did seniors Chad Henninger and Julian Sanchez, who were both making their first appearance for EWU this season.

Navarro prevailed after a competitive match against No. 32 Holton-Burke, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Henninger topped Whitman's Will Husky at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4, while Sanchez beat Roston at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4.

"Mario had a tough match, but showed a lot of resolve in gutting it out," said EWU head coach Darren Haworth. "Chad played really solid as well. He was focused and didn't miss a beat the entire match."

After recording a win in doubles, Koetje picked up another one playing No. 6 singles, as he outlasted James Rivers, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.

On Sunday against Whitworth, EWU dropped just one set in nine complete matches. The Eagles rolled through doubles, as Russell and junior Chris Eriksson won at No. 1, 8-4, Henninger and Sanchez won at No. 2 by the same score and Navarro and Koetje dominated at No. 3, 8-2.

In singles, Russell made his second-straight appearance at No. 1 against Whitworth's Daniel Redfern. Russell won the match quite easily, 6-2, 6-4.

Navarro won his match at No. 2 singles, but it took three sets to knock off Whitworth's Cameron Williams. Navarro earned a quick 6-2 victory in the first set, but then dropped the second by an identical score. In the matchbreaker, the Barcelona, Spain, native had the edge, 10-8.

Henninger and Sanchez won their matches at No. 3 and 4 by the same score of 6-3, 6-1. Koetje made quick work of Stefan Dernbach at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2, while rookie Ben Anderson celebrated his first win as an Eagle at No. 6, 6-4, 6-2.
