Tennis Teams Hit the Road for More Fall Action

Men’s team sends two individuals to Tulsa, while women compete at Jack Taylor Classic in Boise

2012 Jack Taylor Classic Draws

The Eastern Washington University men’s and women’s tennis teams will continue their fall seasons this weekend with a couple of competitive tournaments on the road. The men’s team will have two individuals competing at the ITA All-American Championship Pre-Qualifying tournament in Tulsa, Okla., while the women’s team heads to Boise, Idaho for the Jack Taylor Classic Sept. 28-30.

This will be the second outing of the fall season for both teams. The women debuted at the Cougar Classic Sept. 14-16, while the men hosted the EWU Fall Classic last weekend (Sept. 21-23) to kick off their 2012-13 campaign.

With six new faces on the team this year, the Eagle men used that first home event to get as much match play in as possible for the young members.

Freshman Eduardo Bringold out of Mexico City, Mexico, had the best run at the tournament for an Eagle, as he advanced to the finals of the white flight. Bringold won four-consecutive matches before falling in the championship to Idaho’s Matt Oddonetto by a score of 6-3, 6-3. In the first round, Bringold defeated William Risenhoover from Big Sky rival Portland State, 6-4, 6-1. He then topped Seattle’s Ian Clare, 6-4, 7-5, before beating two Vandals to advance to the finals.

Fellow freshman Eduardo Martinez, who also hails from Mexico City, lost two tough matches in the red flight, both decided in three sets. Martinez will compete this weekend in Tulsa, along with redshirt-sophomore Joseph Cohen.

Cohen transferred from Middle Tennessee State following the 2010-11 season, but utilized his redshirt year with the Eagles in 2011-12. At the EWU Fall Classic, his first official event as an Eagle, Cohen lost his first match to Gonzaga’s Vicente Varas, but rebounded with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the consolation bracket over Portland State’s Brent Wheeler.

Contrary to the men, the Eagle women’s team returned seven letterwinners and three other squad members from the 2011-12 squad. Those Eagles will be busy this weekend in Boise, as all 10 members are scheduled to compete at the three-day tournament.

Eastern will see several other Big Sky schools at the event, including Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Other teams competing include BYU, Colorado State, Utah State, Idaho, Seattle, and host-Boise State. There are a total of 75 individuals entered in the Jack Taylor Classic.

Although the Eagles were not able to record many wins in the main draws of their first event of the year in Pullman, Eastern did get a lot of quality experience. The Eagles had seven individuals play 26 singles matches and seven doubles.
