Cohen Claims POW Honors for Second Time this Season
After a perfect weekend at No. 1 singles, Cohen honored again by Big Sky
For the second time already in the 2013 campaign, sophomore Joseph Cohen (London, England) of the Eastern Washington University men’s tennis team has been recognized by the Big Sky Conference. Cohen was selected as the men’s tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday (March 5) by the league office.
This past weekend in a pair of Big Sky home matches against league-leading Montana State and fifth-place Northern Colorado, Cohen went 2-0 at No. 1 singles.
He cruised past MSU’s Niklas Brandes, 6-3, 6-1, and then led EWU to its first Big Sky win of the year against UNC when he downed Brandon Lupo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Overall on the year, Cohen owns an impressive 5-3 record at No. 1 singles, which includes one victory against nationally-ranked Oregon. Cohen, who is in his first official year in red and white after redshirting the 2012 season, is in fact the only player on the team with a winning record in 2013.
The Eagles will be back in action at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse this weekend for a non-conference dual against Pacific Lutheran. EWU will play the Lutes on Friday (March 8) at 3 p.m.
