Eagles Win Fifth-Straight with Dominant Performance Over T-Birds
Eastern blanks SUU, 7-0, to improve to an even 3-3 in Big Sky play
Make it five in a row for the Eastern Washington University men’s tennis team.
After picking up their fourth-consecutive win less than 24 hours earlier against non-conference foe Seattle, the Eagles swept Big Sky newcomer Southern Utah, 7-0, on Wednesday (March 27) to extend the winning streak to five.
Eastern will go for six in a row on Thursday (March 28) when it takes on Northern Arizona in Flagstaff at 2 p.m.
EWU (7-9, 3-3 Big Sky) won Wednesday's battle of the birds in convincing fashion, taking all six singles matches in straight sets, while only dropping a total of seven games. Every single EWU player won at least one of their sets by a score of 6-0.
The Eagles also dominated doubles, as sophomores Joseph Cohen and Eduardo Martinez at No. 1 and freshmen Eduardo Bringold and Aaron Lince at No. 2 both won by a score of 8-2.
The dual at No. 3 doubles was even more lopsided, as freshman Tomas Aranguiz and senior Kyle Koetje blanked SUU’s Russ Christensen and Branden Olcott, 8-0.
In singles, Cohen earned his seven-consecutive victory at No. 1, defeating SUU’s Troy Benson, 6-0, 6-2.
Aranguiz and Koetje, who have now won six in a row as doubles partners, each won their fifth-straight singles match as well. Aranguiz bested Alex Dial at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2, while Koetje topped Christensen for the second time on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 4.
