Ogden, Utah - Freshman Robert Dula has been named the Big Sky Male Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, Jan. 21.
In his first career collegiate matches, the freshman from Rijeka, Croatia, picked up two wins last weekend, playing at the No. 1 spot in all three of Eastern Washington's matches. Eastern Washington defeated Willamette and Portland State but fell to No. 52 Oregon.
Dula defeated Willamette's Sam Wexman, 6-1, 6-0, and earned a victory over Portland State's No. 1, Brent Wheeler, 6-4, 6-4. Dula fell to Oregon's No. 1, 6-4, 6-1.
"Robert did a great job of competing this last week," head coach Darren Haworth said. "Coming into collegiate tennis and taking over the responsibility as a top player is not an easy task. He's done a great job of bringing a lot of intensity to the matches and getting his teammates fired up to compete hard."
Dula also played all three doubles matches in the top spot, defeating Willamette's duo 6-1 and PSU's doubles team 6-5. Dula and partner Eduardo Bringold lost to Oregon's top duo 6-1.
Dula is the highest-ranked player to ever play at Eastern, earning a spot in the top 200 in the world as a junior.
