Cheney, Wash. – The Eastern Washington men's tennis team shut out visiting Lewis-Clark State 7-0 in its lone match of the week Saturday, Feb. 1.
Eastern improves to 4-2 on the young season with the win and 2-1 in home matches.
"The guys raised the bar for themselves today," head coach Darren Haworth. "They played focused and determined. If they continue to play this well and work hard, I think they are capable of having a great season."
The Eagles secured the doubles point, fending off tough battles from the Warriors in the first and second positions. Freshman Robert Dula and sophomore Eduardo Bringold took the No. 1 match, 6-5, while sophomore Luke Thompson and freshman Wacil Bendjelti claimed the second match, 6-4.
Dula and Thompson dispatched Lewis-Clark State's top two players in straight sets while Bendjelti and freshman Matt Boyle needed just two sets to win their singles matches in the fourth and sixth positions, respectively.
Bringold held on to win his match in the third position while junior Stefan Farrar came back after dropping the first set to give EWU the sweep.
The Eagles are back on the court next Saturday, Feb. 8, when they take on Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
