Spokane, Wash. – The Eastern Washington men's tennis team fell 5-2 at Gonzaga in a hard-fought match Saturday, Feb. 8.
Eastern (4-3) secured the doubles point to start the match off strong but came out on the wrong in of a number of competitive singles matches.
"The guys competed hard today," head coach Darren Haworth said. "The match came down to a few matches and we lost a few big points in first sets that could have been difference makers."
The Eagles' lone singles victory came in the No. 5 position courtesy of junior Stefan Farrar, who defeated the Bulldogs' Vicente Varas 6-2, 6-3.
Playing in the top position, freshman Robert Dula played a hard-fought match against Gonzaga's No. 1, Hayden Smith, falling 6-5, 5-6, 6-4. Bendjelti and freshman Matt Boyle also went three sets before losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, respectively.
Eastern will take a two-week break from matches before resuming competition against UMKC in Cheney on Friday, Feb. 21. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
