Eagle Tennis Squads Dominate Idaho State

March 1, 2008

Pannhara Mam of the Eastern Washington University men's tennis team rewrote the school record book today with his 34th career singles victory, 7-6, 6-1, over Idaho State's Marc Pijoan to take over sole possession of the record. By doing so, he helped Eastern to a 7-0 home Big Sky Conference win over Idaho State on Saturday morning (March 1).

The junior broke a tie he had held with Jason Chapman (1992-95). In fact, the Eagles are in a golden age for their program, as current Eagles hold four of the top five spots on that chart (junior Art Karas has 33 and is now tied for second, while senior Patrick Millican's 30 and junior Kyle Schraeder total of 29 trail shortly behind).

Eastern has now won seven straight matches since starting the season 0-2, its longest winning streak since EWU claimed eight straight contests from March 2-April 12, 1985. Eastern Washington also moved to 2-0 in Big Sky play with its win.

The Eagles won every set played today and outscored Idaho State (1-8, 1-2 BSC) by a combined 97-23 score. Schraeder and Nico Riego de Dios each won by 6-0, 6-1 scores for the two most dominating singles wins on the day (in positions two and three, respectively). In doubles, Karas and Riego de Dios shut out their opponent 8-0.

Eastern will close out its three-match homestand next week with a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday (March 5) versus Idaho (10-7) and a 9 a.m. Big Sky match against Northern Colorado (1-1 entering today) on Saturday (March 8).

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team may have started the 2008 season with a 0-5 record against top competition (four nationally-ranked squads were included in that quintet of contests), the Eagles have showed their resolve as of late, having taken four straight matches since then.

The most recent was a dominating 7-0 defeat of Idaho State in a home Big Sky Conference match on Saturday afternoon (March 1). The win also moved Eastern to 2-0 in the Big Sky. The four-match streak is the team's longest since the 2006 squad also claimed four straight from April 7-14 of that year.

Every singles contest was decided in straight sets today and, in fact, the Eagles outscored Idaho State by a cumulative 96-23 margin. Three Eagles only allowed two games in their respective singles contests: Kasey Knox (a 6-1, 6-1 win at 1), Amanda Mankovits (a 6-1, 6-1 win at 4) and Rachel Berger (a 6-0, 6-2 win at 6).

Doubles play saw Eastern's No. 2 team of Sarah Leuenberger and Marie Demerath dominate their opponent in a 8-0 win.

Eastern returns to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday with a road contest versus Lewis-Clark State. The Warriors entered this week with a 2-1 record, with their only defeat coming to NCAA Division I member Idaho, 7-0. The Eagles will then return home next weekend for a pair of Big Sky matches, versus Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona.
