Eagle Tennis Squads Move to 3-0 in Big Sky

March 8, 2008

With a dominating 7-0 home win over Northern Colorado on Saturday morning (March 8), the Eastern Washington University men's tennis team won its ninth straight match to set a school record for consecutive victories.

The previous record for longest winning streak was eight, set by the 1985 squad from March 2-April 12 of that year. All records are as of Eastern Washington entering the NCAA Division I era in 1984.

The Eagles (9-2, 3-0 BSC) have now impressively rallied from a 0-2 start to its season (in tough road matches versus No. 68 BYU and Oregon) with its record streak.

Daniel Pez had the most dominating win of the day (actually, the most dominating victory of the season) by 6-0, 6-0 scores on court six. It is the first double-love victory for an Eagle in a spring match since Art Karas did so against Idaho State's David Kutchins on March 25, 2007. Pez moved to a perfect 9-0 on the season with his victory.

In fact, every Eagle was simply dominating, as neither allowed more than two games in any of the 12 sets played. In doubles, Eastern Washington was a perfect 3-0 in taking each of those contests by identical 8-4 scores.

The Eagles will now look ahead to a challenge in playing No. 28 Washington on its home courts at 4 p.m. on Friday (March 14). The Huskies also have the 82nd-ranked singles player in the country, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. Washington is 9-4 and will play host to Pacific on Sunday (March 9) prior to meeting the Eagles five days later.

With its sixth straight win, the Eastern Washington University women's tennis team moved to 3-0 in Big Sky Conference play with a dominating 6-1 home win over Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon (March 8). The winning streak is the team's longest since the 1993 squad set the school record with eight consecutive victories.

The Eagles (6-5) grabbed control of today's match by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three by identical 8-3 scores. Marie Demerath and Sarah Leuenberger were victorious at 2, while Kerstyn Dolack and Rachel Berger claimed the win at 3.

Then, in singles, Eastern Washington achieved victories in the first four matches to finish (Dolack at 2, Kasey Knox at 1, Leuenberger at 3 and Amanda Mankovits at 4, her sixth straight) before Berger needed to retire. The most commanding Eagle win of the day, a 6-1, 6-2 victory crafted by Demerath, followed to close out the day's play.

Eastern Washington will now look ahead to one of its most challenging matches of the year, as Northern Arizona will pay a visit to Cheney for an 8 a.m. contest on Sunday (March 9). The Lumberjacks (10-7) are 3-1 in Big Sky play and nearly snapped perennial league power Sacramento State's 43-match winning streak on Feb. 15 before falling to the Hornets 4-3 on Feb. 15.
