Eagles Get Back on Winning Track with 6-1 Defeat of Lewis-Clark State

March 11, 2007

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team won comfortably over Lewis-Clark State (7-4) on Sunday morning to rebound from a tough 4-3 loss to Montana the day before. The Eagles (5-4) have now split their last five contests and look ahead to a road trip to the Beaver State next weekend.

Eastern grabbed the first four points to be scored to clinch the team win. Earning the first two doubles wins were Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder at 1 over Kevin Lee and Ara Sarkissian, 8-3, and Keithan Gregg and Art Karas on the third court versus Cedric Dufour and Andy Hunt.

In the final doubles contest to finish, Nico Riego de Dios earned his first win as an Eagle as, teamed with Patrick Millican, an 8-6 win was secured in the second position over Borja Molas and Ari Zaslow. It was just his second doubles match of the season and first since Feb. 3 (his lone singles appearance also came on that date).

Mam won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Sarkissian for his second victory in two days. Millican has now won 5-of-6 contests following a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win over Dufour on the third court. The Eagle victory was secured when Schraeder moved to 2-0 since playing No. 1 for the first time on Saturday with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Molas.

The next contest to finish saw Gregg drop a 6-4, 4-6, (10-3) decision on court four over Zaslow. Then Karas moved his personal winning streak to six with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over Lee. The match then concluded with Daniel Pez's 6-2, 6-3 win at 6 versus Hunt.

The Eagles next will head to the state of Oregon for a two-match road trip. Eastern Washington battles with the University of Oregon Ducks at 11 a.m. on Saturday (March 17) and University of Portland Pilots at 10 a.m. the next day. The Ducks are 8-6 and coming off back-to-back 6-1 losses to Utah and Penn. Oregon is 0-1 in Pacific-10 play. Portland will bring a 7-4 mark into its match with the Eagles.
