Eastern Continues Play at Season-Opening Tournament

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team continued play at the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Cup on Saturday (Sept. 29). The tournament, played in Portland, Ore., saw many Eagles contribute impressive performances.

"The Eagles had a great day," interim head coach Darren Haworth said. "Nico Riego de Dios had a nice upset of Portland's No. 2 player in the quarterfinals. Kyle Cruzat had a great day - he played two tough matches to earn a spot in the Flight B semifinals.

"Jonathan Davis lost to a top-rated Northwest junior from the University of Portland in three sets, and Art Karas beat two top Gonzaga players.

"We look like we're going to be one of the teams to be in the Northwest."

Pannhara Mam and Nico Riego de Dios advanced to the Flight A singles semifinals before each was defeated by University of Portland opposition.

Art Karas went undefeated on the day in Flight A singles consolation matches. In Flight B singles competition, Kyle Cruzat beat advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins.

Competition will conclude on Sunday (Sept. 30).
