Eastern's Quest Falls Short in 4-1 Loss

April 27, 2006

Idaho State avenged an earlier loss this season to Eastern Washington and defeated the Eagles 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Championship Thursday (April 27) in Pocatello, Idaho.

A No. 4 seed looking for its first-ever win in the tournament, Eastern ended its season with a 10-8 record. The fifth-seeded Bengals improved to 11-11.

Eastern is now winless in eight tournament appearances, but finished the season with seven more victories than last year when the Eagles were just 3-17. The men haven't won 10 matches since finishing 13-10 in the 1985 season.

Earlier this season, Eastern's men defeated Idaho State 6-1 on April 8 in Kennewick, Wash. Eastern swept doubles and won five of six individual matches. The lone loss -- at No. 3 singles -- came in three sets.

But Thursday was a different story as Idaho State opened the match with three doubles victories to register the team point. The Bengals then won three singles matches to secure the victory, with freshman Art Karas registering the lone Eagle win at No. 5 doubles. Karas finished the season with an 11-6 singles record.

Eastern's No. 1 singles player Kyle Schraeder lost 7-5, 6-1 as he finished his freshman season with a 9-9 record. Freshman Pannhara Mam, a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection, had his match stopped once ISU secured the team victory. He was leading the third set 4-3, and finished his debut season 12-5. Although Schraeder and Mam lost together at No 1 doubles 8-5, they finished 12-7 this season.
