April 14, 2007

The Eastern Washington University track and field team split squads this weekend as some competed at the Sam Adams Classic at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash. and the rest of the team traveled to the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.

Eagle sophomore Cody Irby (Otis Orchards, Wash.) placed first in the javelin at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational with a throw of 192-10. His mark is good enough to qualify him for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships (May 11-12) in Pocatello, Idaho.

Freshman Steven Praast (Ravensdale, Wash.) also qualified for the BSC Championships in the high jump. His jump of 6-4 3/4 placed him second at the Sam Adams Invitational.

Also in Berkeley, senior David Paul (Yelm, Wash.) placed first in the shot put (52-2 3/4), second in the hammer (205-11) and third in the discus (170-10). Paul was named the Big Sky Conference field athlete of the week for the second straight week last week, after breaking his own school record in the hammer throw (216-11) at the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational.

Steve Keith (Sr., Vancouver, Wash.) placed first in both the 100 (11.10) and the 200 (22.72) at the Sam Adams Invitational.

Up next the squad will compete Saturday (April 21) at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
