Eastern Washington University senior David Paul was named Field Athlete of the Week by the Big Sky Conference after he broke his own school record in the weight throw last Friday (Jan. 19).
Paul's winning throw of 67-1 1/2 at the 20th Annual Jerry Martin Indoor Track and Field Invitational met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships. The standard is 67-11 3/4 and the automatic mark is 70-6 1/2.
A 2002 graduate of Yelm (Wash.) High School, Paul's throw was the third-longest in Big Sky Conference history. The record is 70-6 1/2 by Montana State's Josh Henigman in 2006. Paul's previous school record was 64-10 set last year.
Paul's throw last week also qualified him for the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Feb. 23 in Bozeman, Mont. Last season, Paul placed second at the indoor championships with a throw of 64-10. The qualifying mark for the men is 53-3 1/2.
He also took first at the Martin Invitational with a throw of 55-7 in the shot put.
The team will split this weekend (Jan 26-27) as some athletes will go to Montana State University and the others will compete at University of Washington's Invitational.
