Paul and Gutierrez named Big Sky Field Athletes of the Week

Eastern Washington University senior David Paul has been named the Big Sky Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while senior Carolee Gutierrez was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Paul and Gutierrez will have the chance to beat their records from last week at the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational in Cheney, Wash. (April 5-6).

Paul qualified for the NCAA West Regionals in the hammer throw, shot put and discus at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont. (March 31). His throw of 214-2, is more than 30 feet than the regional qualifying mark of 182-5. Last season Paul had a best throw of 204-5 in the hammer throw. He is now ranked second on the Big Sky all-time top-10 list right behind Karim Chester of Northern Arizona, who had a throw of 219-8 in 2005.

In the shot put, Paul had a throw of 56-10 1/4 to place fourth in Eastern's record books. His discus throw of 177-11 is more than eight feet further then the NCAA qualifying mark of 169-7. Paul is ranked second in Eastern's record book with a throw of 179-6 last season. Brad Boland set the record in 1980 with a throw of 193-4 1/2.

Gutierrez qualified for the NCAA West Regional (May 25-26, in Eugene, Ore.) in the javelin with a throw of 167-9, which is the new Big Sky all-time best mark and a school record. Stephanie Ulmer previously held the record with a throw of 165-8 last season. Gutierrez also qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw with performances at the Al Manual Invitational (March 31).

The Eagles will host the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational (April 5-6) in Cheney, Wash. The decathlon and heptathlon starts at 1 p.m. (April 5) and will resume at 8:30 a.m. (April 6). The field events begin at noon (April 6) and the running events commence at 4 p.m.
