Eagles Compete in Spokane at the Oregon-Washington Scoring Clash

April 7, 2009

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will compete Saturday (April 11) at the Oregon-Washington Scoring Clash in Spokane, Wash.

The meet will be scored as an Oregon versus Washington dual meet, involving NCAA Division I, II and III schools, as well as a pair of junior colleges and one NAIA university. Oregon schools include Portland State, Eastern Oregon, Linfield and Lane Community College. The Washington schools are Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Whitworth and Community Colleges of Spokane.

"This is the first time we have competed in this meet," said head track and field coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "It is going to be kind of fun to see what is going to happen. Portland State is a Big Sky Conference school and is our Division I competition in this meet. It will be good for our athletes to compete against another Big Sky school."

The meet takes place at Spokane Falls Community College and will begin at 10 a.m. with the men’s hammer, women’s discus and men’s javelin. The running events will start at 11 a.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.

At the Al Manuel Invitational on April 3-4, seven EWU athletes qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships. Among them, Ashley Stabl won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.77 to rank eighth in school history. Also, Amber Nickelson won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:53.01 to rank seventh in school history.

In men’s team scoring, Eastern beat Gonzaga 146-27 and lost to Montana 111.5-81.5 and Montana State 113-81. The Eagle women beat Gonzaga 148-13 and lost to Montana 110.5-87.5 and Montana State 105-84.

Eastern athletes have already met the qualifying standards 23 times for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which take place May 13-16 in Missoula. The list includes 12 for the men and 11 for the women, with seven of the marks earned last week at Missoula.
