Eastern Washington University hosts the 38th Annual Pelluer Invitational Track and Field Meet this Friday (May 1) at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash. About 350 student-athletes from regional colleges will take part in the meet this week.

The meet features NCAA Division I schools Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Idaho, Washington State and Seattle University. Dual meet scoring will be kept between EWU, Gonzaga, Idaho and Seattle University.

Other schools represented will include Lewis-Clark State, Great Falls, Community Colleges of Spokane, Whitworth and Skagit Valley.

Field events of the Pelluer Invitational begin at noon. Running events start at 4 p.m., however, a 10,000-meter race has been added to the schedule and will take place at 3 p.m.

Last year, 394 athletes took part after meets the previous six years featured between 325 and 435 competitors. A record 476 took part in 2001 and 435 participated in 2005.

The meet is dedicated to Arnie Pelluer, a former track and cross country coach at Eastern in 1970-71, and also a coach at Whitworth College and Yakima Valley Community College. After starting the twilight meet in 1971, later that year he died in a swimming accident. The event was renamed in his honor the following year.

The meet will feature Nicole Luckenbach, who broke the meet record last year with a winning throw of 182-10 in the hammer. This year, she broke the school record in that event and leads the Big Sky Conference with a best of 185-7.

Two-time defending Big Sky discus champion Bonnie Berscheid is also expected to compete and will be looking for her first Pelluer title. She is currently first in the conference with a season-best throw of 156-2. Her career-best throw of 157-11 in 2008 ranks second in school history behind the mark of 160-9 set by Carolee Gutierrez in 2007.

Sprinter Krystal Deyo will compete in the 100 meters and long jump, and currently leads the conference in the 100 with a time of 11.90. Her time ranks fourth in school history and she already holds school records indoors in the 60 meters (7.55) and long jump (19-2 3/4).

On the men's side, Big Sky indoor champion Adam Stewart will compete in high jump. He qualified for the conference championships with a mark of 6-8 3/4.

Defending Big Sky outdoor triple jump champion Cameron Moore ranks third in the conference with mark of 47-0 3/4. His career-best mark of 47-9 1/4 came last year.

Eastern athletes have now met the qualifying standards 39 times for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which take place May 13-16 in Missoula, Mont. The list includes 22 for the men and 17 for the women.
