Julie Piper of the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team attained All-Big Sky Conference honorable mention accolades, as announced by league office on Tuesday (March 10).
“Julie is well deserving of this honor,” head coach Wendy Schuller said. “She has worked hard to become the best she can be for our team. I think this is a sign of even better things to come in her future; her best basketball is still ahead of her.”
The sophomore ranked highly in a number of Big Sky statistical categories, placing sixth in rebounds per contest (6.8) and in free throw shooting percentage (78.3) and 23rd in points per game (10.1).
In fact, her free throw shooting this year was the eighth-best in school history. Including her freshman season, she will enter her junior campaign second in EWU annals for free throw shooting percentage in a career (76.0 percent).
Piper tallied at least eight points in 23 of Eastern’s 29 games this season. She had her high, and an Eastern team high, of 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting in Eastern’s battle with second-place Portland State on Jan. 24.
The Roseburg, Ore., native also led the team in rebounding in 18 contests.
Piper and the Eagles finished the 2008-09 season 10-19, 5-11 in Big Sky contests, an improvement of six overall and four conference victories over the year before.
