Former Women's Basketball Player Finding Success in Europe
June 20, 2008
Julie Page, a former Eastern Washington University women's basketball player who played her senior season with the Eagles in 2006-07, has recently not only joined a squad in Italy's highest league, but has also earned appointment to the Great Britain national team roster.
Page joined Banco di Sicilia Ribera after helping lead TV 1872 Saarlouis to a runner-up finish in the DBBL, Germany's national league. Last year, she scored 15.9 points per game and shot 48 percent and 74 percent from the field and free throw lines, respectively.
The team's head coach, Rene Spandauw, had positive things to say about Page. He told eurobasket.com that she was "an important player for the team on and off the court that won a lot of games for the club" and that "as a professional basketball player, she had to take that next step. TV 1872 Saarlouis will support her on that move because she always gave 100 percent for the team."
Also, Page was named to the Great Britain national team roster. The team will soon begin the Eurobasket 2009 (European Championships) qualifying process. After exhibitions with Norway, the Netherlands and Croatia, the squad faces Israel, Lithuania, Germany and Ukraine home-and-away from Aug. 13-Sept. 13. The top two countries of the five plus the best third-place team of the four qualifying groups will advance. Ironically, the road game versus Germany on Aug. 23 will take place in Saarlouis.
