Eagle Women's Basketball Ranks Nationally in Academic Excellence
July 23, 2007
The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team has been named to the 2006-07 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll list for NCAA Division I teams. This marks the sixth straight season the Eagles have been honored as a top-10 school in the rankings.
"I'm very proud of our team," Schuller said. "It is well deserved. That is one our goals every year, to be in the top 10 and to shoot for a national championship in that category. The academic side of things is an important part of what Eagle women's basketball is about. Our players work hard in the classroom and on the basketball court, and it's good to see them get recognition in this manner."
This season, the Eagles finished eighth among NCAA Division I schools with a cumulative 3.47 grade point average. South Dakota State won its second straight national title with a 3.69 GPA. Fellow Big Sky Conference schools in the rankings include Montana State (fourth - 3.56) and Northern Arizona (22nd - 3.31).
The 2006-07 Eagle roster included Phynique Allen, Katy Baker, Sydney Benson, Joanna Chadd, Kari Darnell, Leah Gonnella, Danielle Greaby, Tara Holgate, Jessica Huntington, Ashley Knight, Amanda Murdoch, Brittney Osborn and Nicole Scott.
The WBCA recognizes teams at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, as well as the NAIA and Junior/Community College ranks. The team GPA figures are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's squad list in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team.
