Eagles Once Again Third in Nation in GPA
July 19, 2006
The 2005-06 Eastern Washington University women's basketball team once again had the third-best team grade point average in NCAA Division I as it was honored recently on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.
It is the fourth consecutive year that Eastern ranked at least third or better on the WBCA honor roll. In 2004-05 the Eagles were also third, and in 2003-04 the Eagles were the No. 1 team with a 3.626 GPA.
Last year's squad had a team GPA of 3.474, after a 3.498 average a year earlier. Eastern ranked only behind Indiana State (3.612) and national champion South Dakota State (3.730).
Led by head coach Wendy Schuller, the members of last year's EWU team included Phynique Allen, Sydney Benson, Joanna Chadd, Raelynn Chaffee, Jaime Chicane, Leah Gonnella, Abby Johnson, Ashley Knight, Felice Moore, Breana Olson, Brittney Osborn and Julie Page. Also on last year's roster were redshirts Katy Baker and Tara Holgate.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages for the 2005-06 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
The GPA figures are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's squad list in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point.
Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
