Eastern Washington University women’s golf team concluded its 2009-10 season with an eighth-place finish at the Big Sky Conference Championships April 19-21 at the Octotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

All five of EWU’s golfers finished within nine strokes and eight places within each other. Freshman Dana Stapleton, with rounds of 80, 85 and 81, finished 35th with a 30-over-par three-round total of 246 strokes. Fellow frosh Jayme Carbon, who had rounds of 79 and 75 on the first two days, finished next for the Eagles at 249. She placed 37th, but was 16th before shooting a 95 on the final day.

A year ago, Eastern also placed eighth at the league championships, but had just one returning golfer from that team. Junior Kellie Holmstedt finished 15th last season and placed 39th this season with a total of 250 strokes. Other finishers for the Eagles included freshman Morgan Lee in 40th (252) and freshman Neddy Martinez in 43rd (255).

Eastern’s five-player contingent for final part of the season included four freshmen and Holmstedt. Sophomore Kylie Ray had wrist surgery earlier in the spring, an operation she was originally going to hold off having until the end of the season.

Holmstedt finished the season with a team-leading 79.8 average in 20 rounds, followed by Stapleton with an 83.4 average. Carbon was next at 84.2, followed by Lee at 84.8 and Martinez at 86.7. Ray had an 84.9 average before her injury.
