Eagles Picked to Claim Big Sky Title

Feb. 8, 2008

The Eastern Washington University women's golf team has been selected by the Big Sky Conference coaches to capture the 2008 league championship. The Eagles received eight first-place votes, the maximum possible, and 64 total points in the preseason poll.

The Eagles dominated the Big Sky in the fall portion of the 2007-08 schedule, going a perfect 14-0 against league schools in that time span. The highlight of the fall came on Sept. 25 when Eastern completed its winning of the MDA Invitational, the school's first tournament title since claiming the Inland Empire Intercollegiate in September 2003.

The Eagles will get the spring portion of the 2007-08 campaign underway from March 10-12 at the Spring Invitational, which will take place at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. The Big Sky Championship will occur from April 21-23 at the Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.

"I expect the conference to be very competitive in the spring, and we won't take anything for granted," head coach Marc Hughes said. "We are looking to improve, and that's about all that we can control.

"This group is competitive and focused, which will help. We start the spring in Las Vegas against a great field, and that will give us a better idea of where we are."

Eastern Washington was followed in the poll by (in order): Northern Arizona (54 points, one first-place vote), Northern Colorado (51), Sacramento State (39), Portland State (38), Weber State (29), Montana (23), Montana State (16) and Idaho State (9). Coaches were not allowed to include their own squads when they voted.
